Controversy in the Qualification for Red Bull Tetris Portugal
Controversy in the Qualification for Red Bull Tetris Portugal
The Portuguese edition of Red Bull Tetris became controversial due to the lack of transparency in how players qualified for the National Final. Although the official website implied that the top national players would earn their spot, no detailed rulebook was ever published.
Lack of clear rules
The FAQ page mentioned a qualification phase from June 6 to November 10, 2025, followed by the National Final on November 21. However, it did not explain:
How many players would qualify;
Whether qualification was based solely on the national ranking or also on sub-rankings;
That only the top player of eight separate rankings would earn a place.
Available rankings
On the official classification page (view rankings), the following were shown:
Portugal National Ranking
7 additional sub-rankings (FOX, MOVE_MIND, IST, NOVA FCT, FEUP, FCTUC, IPCA)
Main controversy
Only the 1st place of the national ranking was invited to the National Final. The seven winners of the sub-rankings also qualified — even though many of them had much lower scores than players in the national Top 10.
Example: the MOVE_MIND winner scored 251,106 points (10th nationally) yet was invited, while players 2nd–9th were excluded.
Impact
Several top players publicly voiced their frustration, stating that the fragmented selection method and lack of clear rules created an unfair competition. The national champion ended up being the 1st-ranked player, which matched the qualification scores.
