Atari Acquires "Transport Tycoon" by Chris Sawyer for Expansion and Preservation of the Classic
Atari®, one of the most iconic brands in the world of video games and interactive entertainment, has recently announced the acquisition of Transport Tycoon, the classic 1994 game, through an agreement with its creator, Chris Sawyer. Initially released as a transport simulator, the game revolutionized the genre, standing out for its deep and complex gameplay, detailed pixel graphics, subtle animations, and a wide range of configuration options.
Set in the 1930s during the Great Depression, Transport Tycoon challenges players to take control of a transport company and build an empire using trains, ships, trucks, planes, and helicopters. As the empire grows, players must overcome AI-controlled rivals while leveraging technological advancements to move more passengers and cargo.
The original DOS version was released in 1994, followed by versions for Mac, PlayStation, and SEGA Saturn. In 1995, Transport Tycoon Deluxe introduced new landscapes, vehicles, weather conditions, and scenarios, as well as expanded the game's historical timeline, allowing players to simulate the empire's growth from 1950 to 2050. In 2013, the game was ported to mobile platforms.
30 years after its release, Transport Tycoon continues to be widely praised by both critics and players, recognized for its elegant combination of simplicity and realistic simulation.
“We are deeply honored by the trust that Chris has placed in us to take care of Transport Tycoon. Our team is committed to preserving and expanding this groundbreaking creation,” said Wade Rosen, Chairman and CEO of Atari.
Atari plans to expand the game's digital and physical distribution, explore the development of new titles or related content, and assess potential brand collaborations and merchandising as part of a long-term strategy to preserve and expand this simulation classic.
Additionally, Atari is already the publisher of Chris Sawyer’s 2004 title, Locomotion, which was described as the spiritual successor to Transport Tycoon, and is also the publisher of the famous RollerCoaster Tycoon franchise.
