Shawn Layden Claims that the PS6 Will Not Be Exclusively Digital
Shawn Layden, former PlayStation leader, stated in an interview with the Kiwi Talkz podcast that Sony would face immense difficulty selling a PlayStation 6 (PS6) without a physical disc drive. The comment came in the context of discussions around the possibility of the console being exclusively digital. According to Eurogamer, Layden believes that a model without a disc drive would not be well received by consumers, as Sony's global market, vast and diverse, would likely not accept this format.
In his analysis, Layden mentioned that Xbox's strategy of investing in a disc-free version was more successful in specific markets, such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa—English-speaking countries. However, he believes Sony must consider how a disc-free console could negatively impact consumer acceptance, especially outside these specific markets.
"In fact, I don't think Sony will get away with this," Layden said. "Xbox has had more success in pursuing this strategy, but Xbox is more successful in its business in a group of countries, coincidentally, all English-speaking countries." The former PlayStation head indicated that Sony has certainly conducted research into this scenario, but due to the immense diversity of its market, the company would still not feel comfortable going down this path. For Layden, Sony will not remove the disc drive in the PS6.
